Facts:
- Hip-Hop in the Park Foundation is a non-profit organization with three board members (Don Welsh, chair; Jermaine Curtis, treasurer; Omar Mouallem, secretary).
- The Hip-Hop in the Park planning committee consists of about a dozen individuals who represent rappers, producers, DJs, promoters, dancers and record company owners in Edmonton’s hip-hop community.
- The foundation is funded by the members, donations, fundraisers and sponsorships.
- Hip-Hop in the Park was one of the first public events to utilize Louise McKinney Riverfront Park as a show venue.
- The event began in 2008 as a one-day free event to celebrate International Hip-Hop Appreciation Week. It has since spawned various hip-hop community initiatives such as the Hip-Hop on the Court community basketball game in 2009, the Hip-Hop in the Dark concert (May 21, 2010) and the annual championship battles between local producers and rappers.
- 2008 attendance was approx. 700; 2009 attendance was approx. 3000; planners are expecting about 4000 people in 2010.
