Give us a hand, volunteer

Hip-Hop in the Park is a volunteer-run event. We are currently seeking 20 to 30 individuals this year to mind the tables, confection, handle registration and information liaising and helping run workshops. The size and success of the past two years’ events have been limited only by the amount of event help needed to operate an outdoor function that thousands cherish.

We are not looking for new volunteers, however, if you have helped out in the past, we would love to have you on our team again. If you are capable of changing to a different scenarios quickly and are easy-going, then we could use your help.

Hip-Hop in the Park needs volunteers on Sat., May 22, 2010 from 10 am. to 10 p.m. Anyone able to dedicate a portion of that day to event operations will get a chance to enjoy our festival on a more intimate and personal level, as well as gain experience and get a reference letter for a future employer, if requested. Oh, and a pretty cool Hip-Hop in the Park shirt, too.

What a day!

We’d like to thank everybody that was a part of Hip Hop in the Park. The performers, the volunteers, the organizers and all of the people that came out and made it such a beautiful day. THANK YOU.

I know it was not perfect; a few swear words slipped… we ran out of water…

But really… Thousands of people came down and enjoyed a beautiful day under the sun, enjoyed the park, the people, the vibes and the best of Edmonton Hip Hop Culture.

Last years event was great, and still we had complaints to the city and the papers… I encourage people to take a minute or two and write a letter or an email to the City of Edmonton (311@edmonton.ca) to praise today’s festival… or to the newspapers. (Edmonton Journal, letters@thejournal. canwest.com) (Edmonton Sun, mailbag@edmsun.com)

I guarantee there are way more people that enjoyed today than did not, but the haters seem to make noise and paint a bad picture of Edmonton Hip Hop. If you can, take a minute and let them know what you thought of the event.

Thanks again for everything. I am very happy with the way things turned out today.

Much Luv + Respect,

The Hip Hop in the Park Foundation

Dats a rap: Joey Dats wins 2009 HHitP Producer Battle

Congratulations to Joey Dats (of The Greater Good) after winning the trophy as Hip Hop in the Park’s 2009 Producer Battle champion. It was a close one; here’s how it went down:

Semifinal A: Jae Mayes vs. Architect - winner: Jae Mayes

Semifinal B: Redef vs. Joey Dats - winner: Joey Dats

Final: Joey vs. Jae in one tough, close, holy smokes, hype battle. Each played two instrumentals and at first it looked like the judges were leaning toward Jae Mayes. Then, overtime was demanded. So in OT, the two went head-to-head once more and Joey Dats came just over the edge as the judge’s favourite. But it was a tough battle. Congrats to Joey Dats.
